API Terms of Service

Effective Date: March 30, 2026

These API Terms of Service (“API Terms”) govern your access to and use of the SpotCrime.io application programming interface, data feeds, and related services (collectively, the “API”). By accessing or using the API, you agree to be bound by these API Terms and all applicable SpotCrime policies. If you do not agree, do not use the API.

1. Eligibility & Account

You must be at least 18 years old and legally authorized to enter into contracts to use the API. If you are using the API on behalf of a business entity, you represent that you have authority to bind that entity. You are responsible for all activity under your API credentials.

2. API Access & Keys

SpotCrime will issue you one or more API keys upon approval of your access request. You must:

  • Keep your API keys confidential and not share them with unauthorized parties.
  • Immediately notify SpotCrime at Feedback@spotcrime.com if you believe your key has been compromised.
  • Not use another client’s API key or attempt to obtain keys through fraudulent means.

SpotCrime reserves the right to revoke or rotate API keys at any time for any reason, including but not limited to suspected abuse or non-payment.

3. Subscription Plans & Call Allocations

API access is sold on monthly subscription plans. Each plan includes a specified number of API calls per month (“Monthly Allocation”):

PlanMonthly CallsPrice
Developer500$199/month
Pro10,000$599/month
EnterpriseUnlimitedCustom

Use-It-or-Lose-It Policy. Monthly Allocations do not roll over. Any unused API calls at the end of a billing month expire and are forfeited. SpotCrime does not issue credits or refunds for unused allocations.

4. Overage & Additional Call Packs

If you exhaust your Monthly Allocation before the end of a billing period, API requests will return a 429 Quota Exceeded response until your allocation resets at the start of your next billing cycle.

To avoid service interruption, you may purchase additional call packs at any time:

Additional Call Pack

10,000 additional API calls — $599

Packs are valid for the current billing month only and are non-refundable. Unused calls from a pack do not roll over.

To purchase additional call packs, contact Feedback@spotcrime.com or submit a request through your account portal. SpotCrime will invoice you and apply the additional calls upon payment confirmation.

5. Billing & Payment

Subscriptions are billed monthly in advance. Invoices are due within 30 days of issuance. Overdue accounts may have API access suspended after written notice. SpotCrime reserves the right to apply a late payment fee of 1.5% per month on past-due balances.

All fees are in US dollars and are non-refundable except as expressly stated in these API Terms or required by applicable law.

6. Rate Limits

In addition to Monthly Allocations, each plan is subject to per-minute rate limits:

  • Developer: 60 requests per minute
  • Pro: 300 requests per minute
  • Enterprise: Custom (as specified in your agreement)

Exceeding rate limits will result in 429 Too Many Requests responses. Persistent or deliberate rate limit abuse may result in suspension or termination of your API access.

7. Permitted Uses

Subject to these API Terms, SpotCrime grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and use the API solely to:

  • Build and operate applications and services for your end users.
  • Integrate crime and safety data into your commercial or non-commercial products.
  • Access endpoints and features available under your subscribed plan.

Paid plans include a commercial use license. The Developer plan may not be used for applications with more than 10,000 monthly active users without upgrading to a higher plan.

8. Prohibited Uses

You may not use the API to:

  • Resell, sublicense, or redistribute raw SpotCrime data as a standalone data product or data feed.
  • Harvest, scrape, or bulk-export data beyond what your plan permits.
  • Build tools that target, surveil, harass, or discriminate against individuals based on protected characteristics.
  • Create products that facilitate stalking, harassment, or illegal surveillance.
  • Circumvent rate limits or quota restrictions through proxying, credential sharing, or any technical means.
  • Interfere with or disrupt SpotCrime’s infrastructure, servers, or networks.
  • Use the API in any manner that violates applicable federal, state, or local laws.
  • Train machine learning models on SpotCrime data without an explicit written agreement.

9. Data Ownership & Intellectual Property

SpotCrime retains all right, title, and interest in and to the API, the crime data, SpotScore™ ratings, and all related intellectual property. These API Terms do not grant you any ownership rights in SpotCrime data.

You retain ownership of your application and any original content you create. You grant SpotCrime a limited license to use anonymized, aggregated usage data to improve the API and its services.

You may not use SpotCrime’s name, logo, or trademarks (including SpotScore™) without prior written consent, except as permitted in SpotCrime’s brand guidelines.

10. Attribution

Where technically feasible, applications that display SpotCrime data to end users must include a visible attribution such as “Powered by SpotCrime” or “Crime data by SpotCrime.io.” Enterprise clients with white-label agreements are exempt from this requirement.

11. Uptime & SLA

SpotCrime targets the following uptime commitments:

  • Developer: Best-effort availability. No SLA.
  • Pro: 99.9% monthly uptime SLA. Service credits available for verified downtime below SLA.
  • Enterprise: 99.99% monthly uptime SLA with dedicated infrastructure. Terms specified in your enterprise agreement.

Scheduled maintenance windows and force majeure events are excluded from uptime calculations. Service credits are your sole remedy for downtime and will not exceed one month’s subscription fee.

12. Data Accuracy & Disclaimers

SpotCrime crime data is sourced from public records, police department feeds, and third-party sources. While SpotCrime makes reasonable efforts to maintain data accuracy:

  • SpotCrime does not warrant that the data is complete, accurate, current, or error-free.
  • Crime data should not be used as the sole basis for decisions affecting life safety, emergency response, or law enforcement action.
  • SpotScore™ ratings are proprietary estimates and do not constitute guarantees of safety.

THE API AND DATA ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR NON-INFRINGEMENT.

13. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SPOTCRIME SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE API OR DATA, EVEN IF ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES. SPOTCRIME’S TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING UNDER THESE API TERMS SHALL NOT EXCEED THE FEES YOU PAID IN THE THREE (3) MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.

14. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless SpotCrime and its officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising from: (a) your use of the API; (b) your violation of these API Terms; or (c) your application’s violation of applicable law or third-party rights.

15. Term & Termination

These API Terms are effective as of your first API access and continue until terminated. Either party may terminate at any time with 30 days’ written notice. SpotCrime may immediately suspend or terminate your access for:

  • Material breach of these API Terms (including non-payment or prohibited use).
  • Conduct that SpotCrime reasonably determines to be harmful to its users, infrastructure, or reputation.
  • A legal requirement or court order.

Upon termination, your license to use the API ends immediately. You must cease all use of the API and delete any cached SpotCrime data within 30 days. Fees paid prior to termination are non-refundable unless termination is initiated by SpotCrime without cause.

16. Changes to These Terms

SpotCrime may update these API Terms at any time. We will provide at least 30 days’ notice of material changes via email to your registered address or a notice in your account portal. Continued use of the API after the effective date of updated terms constitutes your acceptance of the changes.

17. Governing Law

These API Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any disputes shall be resolved exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Baltimore County, Maryland, and you consent to personal jurisdiction in those courts.
