- What does SpotCrime provide for family-safety apps?
- A real-time crime-data API that returns nearby incidents for any U.S. address across 22,000+ cities, so consumer apps can show families what has been reported around home, school, and travel routes and alert them when new incidents land nearby.
- Where does the data come from?
- Police department feeds, 911 systems, and verified public sources, plus FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data for the free Crime Grade. Every incident is sourced — no proprietary black-box score.
- How recent is the data?
- It refreshes about every 15 minutes from most agencies. The API returns a rolling 90-day window of incidents on standard plans, with longer lookback available on higher tiers.
- Is it free for personal use?
- The public neighborhood crime map and Crime Grade lookups are free for personal use. Building the data into an app or product uses the commercial API, which requires a paid plan and a registered static IP address.
- How is this different from a family-tracking app?
- Tracking apps show where your family members are; SpotCrime shows what is happening around them — reported crime near any location — so the two complement each other.
